Folded Steel Katana Swords

05/11/2018

Are you a first-time buyer of katana sword? If so, then you must not know about a katana, its types, and about its origination. The variations I'm talking about are not the different external designs and variety in shapes, but about their internal compositions. There is a difference in the shape of blades as well. The strength, weight and cutting scheme differs with the materials, design and the process in which it has been forged.

Before you decide to buy a sword, you should have a knowledge of the different types of katana swords. Let's look into the variations.

• Folded steel (tamahagane)

Blades created by folded steel have a high level of carbon content. The more is the amount of carbon, the more is its strength after forging it. It is actually a traditional Japanese method that was practiced many years ago. The word 'Tamahagane' means a precious steel manufactured from a mixture of iron and sand. The process of forging katana with folded steel is a very time consuming one. The blade of the sword is repeatedly hammered and finally brought to shape. It is best suited for people practicing martial arts.

• Stainless steel

Although stainless steel made swords look more appealing and aesthetic, yet are primarily used as a showpiece. The molecular compositions of these swords are not the same as folded steel katana. So, the former's durability is much less than the latter. The blade is brittle and easily breaks with hard slashes. The swords are a bit dangerous. So, it is better to hang it on the wall than use it for practicing.

• Carbon steel

If you are looking for something of better quality at an affordable range, the carbon steel katanas are the best. Because of their chemical process of manufacturing, they are generally much more durable and resistant to any harm. The more is the carbon content is the sword, the more durability is imparted to the blades of the sword.

• T10 tool steel

This is a newbie to the katana steel family. It is an alloy of Tungsten that mixes carbon with silicon. If you are still eager about swords, read more here:
